Polish energy giant LOTOS has taken possession of an offshore oil rig which it will use to begin drilling up to 15 wells in Poland's area of the Baltic Sea off its northern coast.

“As soon as the Mining Authority decides that the structure is seaworthy, the 'LOTOS Petrobaltic' rig will commence operations in the Baltic Sea,” says Zbigniew Paszkowicz, Vice-President of the Management Board of LOTOS Group S.A.

LOTOS estimates that the so-called 'B8' oil field's production potential is at 3.5 million tonnes of crude oil and could yield around 220,000 tonnes of oil annually.

The new rig, capable of drilling at over 100 metres, was built in Singapore in 1989 and was previously used to drill for oil by the Transocean Offshore Gulf of Guinea Ltd off the western African coast. (pg)
