The Lithuanian government has agreed to spend over 9 million euros on the purchase of portable Polish air defence systems by the close of 2016.

The plan to buy Polish Grom (Thunder) systems was approved at a cabinet meeting earlier this week.
“It will be a few dozen sets, and we will buy directly from the producer,” confirmed Minister of Defence Juozas Olekas.
Grom systems are manufactured by state-owned company Bumar Amunicja (formerly Mesko) in Skarzysko-Kamienna, southern Poland.
They were introduced to the Polish army in 1995, and are also exported to countries such as Georgia and Indonesia.
The systems are designed for use against low-flying helicopters and airplanes. A Grom missile can destroy targets at distances from 500m to 5.5 km, and at a height of 10m to 3.5 km. (nh)
