Polish State Railways (PKP) will dramatically reduce fines for travellers who board high-speed Pendolino trains without a ticket.

On most PKP services, travellers can buy tickets on board without a fine, but to the surprise of many customers, that is not uniformly the case with Pendolino trains, which were introduced in December 2014.
At present, both ticket-dodgers and customers who mistakenly believe they can buy a ticket on board without a penalty face fines as high as PLN 650.
However, as of 5 May, the penalties will be considerably less harsh on Express InterCity Premium services.
Provided that a traveller buys his or her ticket on the train when the inspector arrives, the surcharge will be PLN 130. The penalty will be PLN 162.50 if the payment is made within seven days.
To this must be added the cost if the ticket itself (the average price of a one-way service between Warsaw and Kraków is PLN 129.2).
Currently, connections between the Polish capital and Gdynia, Katowice, Kraków and Wrocław are available, and more routes are planned. (nh)
