Polish State Railways (PKP) has announced that a million passengers have used high-speed Pendolino services since their introduction in December 2014.

The trains, which are run as part of PKP Intercity services, have provided a major boost to custom, according to PKP chairman Jakub Karnowski.

“Rail is back in the game,” Karnowski said.

“In April, five months after the launch of Pendolino, we noted a 23 percent rise in the number of our passengers compared with last year.”

PKP Intercity currently offers connections between the Polish capital and Gdynia, Katowice, Kraków and Wrocław, and more routes are planned.

Horse accident

Meanwhile, it has emerged that a horse died on Sunday after being hit by a Pendolino train travelling from Warsaw to Wrocław.

Apparently, a man had tried to cross the tracks with a horse, and when he saw the train coming he ran away, leaving the horse on the line. The animal was killed immediately.

The service was 90 minutes late as a result of the incident, but no passengers were injured. (nh)
