"It's a myth that the Pendolino runs empty and that the offer of PKP Intercity is only for rich people," state-owned railway PKP SA board member Peter Ciżkowicz told a press conference.
The board member said the average passenger fillout on the Premium Intercity Express trains was 53 percent, compared to 50 percent on both Deutsche Bahn (Germany) and Trenitalia (Italy) trains.
He added that 1/3 of tickets for the Pendolino trains and inter-city trains are sold for less than PLN 60 and 2/3 of tickets for inter-city trains are sold for under PLN 40.
Profits from sales was PLN 2.5 million in May and PLN 7.4 million in June, he went on.
The first high-speed Pendolino trains, manufactured by Alstom, began running on Polish tracks on 14 December 2014. The trains operate routes linking all major cities. The Pendolino IC train consists of seven carriages and can carry up to 402 people. (jh)
