Foreign trade maintains surplus momentum

After seven months of the year Poland’s exports reached PLN 422.79 billion, and imports PLN 414.71 billion, giving a surplus on the foreign trade balance of PLN 8.7 billion (about EUR 2.1 billion), the Central Statistical Office (GUS) said on Friday.
A year ago the balance was in deficit of PLN 6.18 billion, with exports up 5.9 percent year-on-year and imports up 2.3 percent since then.
Deputy Prime Minister Janusz Piechociński told reporters that last year "we had completely different commodity prices. Let us remember that we import a lot of raw materials in dollars. Therefore, lower commodity prices automatically translate into a positive trade balance. Let us look at it in terms of jobs, optimism, the need to use existing manufacturing capacity in the country," he said.
In the first half of the year Poland noted a PLN 11.96 billion surplus in foreign trade, after a PLN 4.052 billion deficit a year earlier. (jh)
