Polish farmers see second biggest decrease in income among EU nations

The agricultural industry in the European Union has shrunken in recent months, with Germany and Poland the worst affected in terms of farmers' income.

Real agricultural income per worker in Germany dropped by 37.6 percent in 2015 compared with the previous year.

Poland, second worst in the results, saw its farmers lose 23.8 percent of their income.

Real agricultural income per worker in the EU “has decreased by 4.3 percent in 2015. Across the EU Member States, real agricultural income per worker in 2015 is expected to have risen in thirteen Member States and fallen in fifteen compared with the previous year, albeit in different proportions,” the European statistics agency, Eurostat, said in a statement.

The largest increases in the income of farmers was seen in Croatia (+ 21.5 percent), Latvia (+ 14.3 percent), Greece (+ 12.1 percent), France (+ 8.8 percent) and Italy (+ 8.7 percent).

Meanwhile, farmers blocked streets in Sępólno Krajeńskie, northwestern Poland, demanding higher prices of livestock, which have fallen below PLN 3 per kilogramme. (rg/pk)
