The number of charities in Poland quadrupled from 2,200 to about 9,000 between 2004 and 2015, the Central Statistical Office (GUS) has said.

Charities make up about 10 percent of active non-profits, according to GUS data released as Poland enters tax time.

Every year, Poles are able to allocate one percent of their income tax to a charity of their choosing.

Last year, some 8,000 charities received donations of one percent of income tax. While these donations averaged PLN 70,000 (EUR 16,300) about half of the organisations received less than PLN 5,000, the statistical office said.

Last year a total of PLN 620 million was donated to charities through allocations of one percent of tax by some 13.2 million taxpayers, a 15 percent increase on 2005. (vb/pk)
