EU to give go-ahead to Nord Stream II?

Brussels may be set to give the green light to the planned Nord Stream II pipeline between Russia and Germany, bypassing Poland and other countries in the region, the EurActiv media platform has reported.

According to EurActiv, Russian gas monopoly Gazprom has made promises to the European Commission - which include lifting limits on gas re-exports and setting its pricing policy in line with market prices – that may see a new chapter in relations between the Kremlin and the EU.
This, in turn, may lead to Brussels approving the planned Nord Stream II pipeline, which is opposed by officials in Warsaw, EurActiv reported.
Poland has warned that the pipeline would further increase the EU’s dependence on Russian gas.
The European Commission has asked affected countries, including Poland, to comment on Gazprom’s proposal, giving them seven weeks.
The commission is expected to analyse those comments before deciding if Gazprom’s assurances are enough to close an anti-monopoly probe into the Russian company launched in 2015.
Gazprom’s deals with wholesalers capped the sale of gas to eight EU countries, including Poland, but a new deal between the Russian gas company and European Commission may see free gas trade in the EU. (vb/pk)
