Polish gov’t to collect extra billions from VAT, CIT: deputy PM

The Polish government's campaign to fight tax evasion will see an extra PLN 25 billion (EUR 5.9 bn) or so collected in value added tax (VAT) revenue this year, the country’s finance minister has said.

The government’s revenue from corporate income tax (CIT) will also grow for the first time in years, increasing by more than 10 percent, Mateusz Morawiecki said.
CIT revenue did not grow under the country’s previous governments, according to Morawiecki, who is also development minister and a deputy prime minister.
Thanks to the increased revenue, Poland's conservative government can finance huge social spending programmes, he said on state television on Monday evening.
"Were it not for these huge social programmes -- with which I am very happy because we have eliminated poverty among children practically to zero, and have reduced social tensions -- we would record a budget surplus for the first time in 30 if not 230 years," he said.
Poland will have a budget deficit of over PLN 30 billion (EUR 7.1 bn) and a general government deficit of around PLN 50 billion (EUR 11.8 bn) at the end of this year, Morawiecki also said. (gs/pk)
