PKP Intercity places large order for new carriages

Polish state-owned rail carrier PKP Intercity has placed an order for 55 new carriages, at a total cost of PLN 473.5 million (EUR 113 million), as part of ongoing efforts to modernise rolling stock.

The order for the new carriages was placed with the Polish firm H.Cegielski-FPS, and is understood to be the largest order in the firm’s history.
Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said: “Polish industry is slowly being reborn. Thanks to cooperation between Polish firms new contracts are being signed.”
After touring H.Cegielski-FPS Morawiecki added: “I believe that further impulses for development will emerge from this factory, prompting re-industrialization and industrial development.”
The prime minister highlighted that in 2017 Poland accounted for half of all new industrial jobs created in Europe.
The order includes a mixture of both first and second class carriages, as well as some carriages with compartment seating. All carriages will have air conditioning and Wi-Fi.
In addition PKP Intercity has options to purchase a further 26 carriages, which would bring the deal’s total value to PLN 697 million (EUR 167 million).
The contract forms part of an ongoing modernization plan by PKP Intercity. The company expects to spend a total of PLN 7 billion (EUR 1.7 billion) on rolling stock in the coming years. (sl/pk)
