Polish ruling party pledges new benefits for disabled

Poland’s governing conservatives have promised new benefits for disabled people to add to a string of pledges ahead of European Parliament elections.

During a campaign rally at the weekend, top politicians from the ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party said that all adult Poles who were seriously disabled and unable to fend for themselves would be provided with a new handout of around PLN 500 (EUR 116, USD 130) every month.
The new benefits, which are expected to kick in later this year, will in part be financed from a new retail tax endorsed by a European Union court, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki told a convention in the southern city of Kraków on Sunday.
An EU court last week ruled that the European Commission had incorrectly classified a new Polish progressive retail tax as state aid. The ruling appeared to open the way for Poland's government to reinstate the disputed tax, which was originally introduced in September 2016 and which was subsequently blocked by Brussels.
Polish voters will on Sunday, May 26, go to the ballot box to elect their representatives for the European Parliament.
