A new survey released by the European Commission on rail operators in the EU places Poland’s state operator PKP last in a number of categories polled.

The survey, which was released this week by the European Commission, reveals that Poles are the most dissatisfied Europeans when it comes to rail travel, slamming the quality of station and train facilities, provision of information, as well as personal security.

Other categories where Polish railways failed to provide satisfaction were frequency of trains, length of journeys, and connections with other trains.

Minister of Infrastructure Cezary Grabarczyk has commented on the survey, agreeing with most of Poles’ complaints as to the service offered by PKP.

Criticising earlier governments for not looking after train transport in Poland, Grabarczyk said that the negative assessment of Poles “is the result of financial neglect of the rail sector over nearly 20 years.”

The survey was undertaken in all EU countries, with a total of almost 10,000 respondents giving their opinions on domestic rail services.

In Poland, 410 people were surveyed, 54.8 percent of whom stated that they were very satisfied or rather satisfied with rail services, while 41.2 percent were either rather dissatisfied or very dissatisfied with Polish railways. (jb)
