Holland introduces ‘Pole Tax’?

With the majority of immigrants in the city being of Polish origin, the charge has been dubbed the ‘Pole Tax’, or ‘Polentaks’, and would be levied on the few hundred workers from Central Europe estimated to be working in Venlo.

Currently, regulations state that if seasonal workers live on campsites and in workers’ hotels, they have to pay a tourist tax. However, a number of employers have begun to give shelter to their workers on their own premises.

“These people are using for free the things that we must pay for – they should also pay,” Venlo town councillor Jos Teeuwen is reported to have said.

Meanwhile, the Limburg Agricultural and Horticultural Association, LLTB, has opposed the tax, with the union hoping to enter talks with the municipality over the ‘Pole Tax’. (jb)
