Polish culture festival in Vilnius marks centenary of independence

More than 30 Polish folk song and dance troupes from Lithuania are set on Saturday to perform in the 25th Festival of Polish Culture in Vilnius.

The 2018 edition of the festival is dedicated to the centenary of Polish independence.
"Patriotic songs will be performed. This festival brings together all generations," said Apolonia Skakowska, director of the Stanisław Moniuszko Polish Cultural Centre in Lithuania.
On November 11, Poland will mark exactly 100 years since Polish statesman Józef Piłsudski arrived in Warsaw after being held prisoner in Germany during World War One, announcing Polish independence on the same day that the armistice to end the Great War was signed, paving the way for Poland to return to the map of Europe after more than 120 years of partitions and foreign rule.
With some 200,000 people of Polish descent in Lithuania, or about seven percent of the population, Poles make up Lithuania's largest ethnic minority. (vb)
