Pole takes over as EBRD chief economist

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) in London has appointed Polish economist Beata Smarzyńska-Javorcik as its chief economist. She takes up her duties in September.

Smarzyńska-Javorcik has carved out an academic and professional career abroad. She is a professor of economics at the University of Oxford.
She is also a member of the Executive Committee of the Royal Economic Society. She has previously worked at the World Bank in Washington DC.
She holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Yale University.
