Gala concert launches International Ada Sari vocal contest

An international vocal competition named after Polish soprano Ada Sari opens Saturday with a gala concert at the Krzysztof Penderecki European Centre for Music in Lusławice, southern Poland.
The programme includes the concert version of Puccini’s ‘Suor Angelica’ and the symphonic poem ‘Anhelli’ by the Polish composer Ludomir Różycki performed by the Beethoven Academy Orchestra conducted by Jose Cura.
The competition auditions begin on Sunday in Nowy Sącz, with the participation of 81 young singers from 14 countries, including China, Georgia and Brazil.
A prizewinners’ concert will be held on 5 May.
Founded in 1985, the Ada Sari Vocal Competition is held every two years. This year’s 18th edition of the event.
Ada Sari (born Jadwiga Szayer) was born in 1886. She studied music in Kraków, Vienna and Milan. After making her professional debut in Rome in 1909, she developed a spectacular career which included performances in some of the most prestigious venues in Europe, the United States and South America.
She returned to Poland in 1934 and sang at the Grand Opera in Warsaw.
During the Second World War, she directed an underground opera studio in Warsaw and started teaching. After the war she continued to perform in operas and on the concert stage for two years, after which she devoted herself exclusively to teaching.
She died in 1968. (mk)
