Chopin competition for amateurs

About forty amateur pianists are taking part in an international Chopin competition in Warsaw.

The pianists hail from over a dozen countries, including the United States, Canada, Japan, Argentina, Spain, Turkey, Brazil and South Korea.
All of the competitors are under 25, do not make a living from piano performance or teaching, and they are not students of piano studies of any music school or conservatory.
This year -- the fourth edition of the competition -- includes a special twist as Poland celebrates its centenary of independence.
As well as works by Chopin, the competing pianists will be required to perform a piece by Ignacy Jan Paderewski, the composer and statesman considered to be one of the architects of Polish independence.
Poland celebrates 100 years since it regained independence, after more than 120 years of partitions and foreign rule, on November 11.
Prizewinners are to be announced on Thursday. (mk/vb)
