Urszula Radwanska follows in sister's footsteps

The win marks a notable breakthrough for the 21-year-old, who is currently rated No. 57 in the WTA Tour rankings.

Radwanska's chances of making the semi-finals are not unreasonable, with the Cracovian due to play American Coco Vandeweghe (now ranked No.120).

Nevertheless, Vandeweghe managed to beat Radwanska in their last encounter (in Nottingham, England) two sets to one, and the American will have the home crowd behind her.

Radwanska's elder sister Agnieszka, who was defeated in the Wimbledon Ladies' final on Saturday by Serena Williams, is taking a rest in the lead-up to the Olympics.

Meanwhile, Williams herself has also qualified for the Stanford quarter-finals, and is the favourite to win the tournament.

Both Urszula and Agnieszka Radwanska will be competing in the singles tournament of the London Olympics later this month. They will also be joining forces in the doubles.

Since their father Robert Radwanska handed over chief training duties to Tomasz Wiktorowski 14 months ago, both siblings have enjoyed the best period of their careers.

Speaking to the Polish Press Agency earlier this week, Wiktorowski said that the younger sister is not to be underestimated.

“Ula is very hard-working, and hungry for success,” he said.

“She has all the right conditions to be thinking about catching up with Agnieszka,” he added. (nh)
