Rafał Omelko managed to run a personal best of 46.26 seconds in the 400m. He came in just a split second behind Belgian Dylan Borlee (46.25 seconds), while Russian Pavel Maslak streaked to victory with 45.33 seconds.

Meanwhile, in the pole vault, Piotr Lisek catapulted himself over the bar at 5.85 m. Had he cleared it on his first attempt, he might have taken silver, which was ultimately won by Russia's Aleksandr Gripich, who managed the height first time round. Gold went to France's Renaud Lavillenie, with 6.04m, a championship record. (nh)
