Sonik, who won the treacherous Dakar Rally earlier this year, now has a 28-minute lead over his closet rival, Qatari Abu Issa Mohammed.
The event is part of the FIM Cross-Country Rallies World Championship, and Sonik is winning in the overall rankings so far.
Meanwhile, among the car-drivers, former ski-jumping sensation Adam Małysz is coming fourth in the Egyptian race. He came in seventh in the third leg.
“A very diificult third stage is now behind us,” a relieved Małysz wrote on his Facebook profile.
“Keep your fingers crossed for us tomorrow,” he added.
“We've got two tough stages until the end of the rally and anything can happen.” (nh)
