The Pole won the first stage of Thursday evening's three-part showdown, coming third in the second leg, and second in the last.
Kajetanowicz, who is riding with LOTOS, is just 1.4 seconds behind Irish racer Craig Breen.
“It was a good but tough beginning of the rally for LOTOS Rally Team,” he reflected on Thursday evening.
“Today each test was completely different, so we had to change the set-up of the car between the stages.
“In these variable conditions our tyres performed quite well in some sections and slightly worse in others, but this was one thing that we could not change.”
Friday sees a further eight stages.
“These roads are very demanding from physical point of view,” he said, adding that he feels in good shape this year. (nh)
