Artur Kozłowski finished with a time of 2:11.54, simultaneously becoming Polish champion. Second place in the race on Sunday went to Henryk Szost, with a time of 2:12.40.
Kenyan and Ethiopian athletes had been favourites in the race. But Kozłowski took the lead four kilometres before the finishing line, by the National Stadium in Warsaw.
"I can’t believe it myself,” Kozłowski said.
He added that just ahead of the race he had “not assumed that I was capable of winning. I focused instead on maintaining a good, even pace and getting the minimum time needed for the Rio de Janeiro Olympics.”
Kenya’s Charles Munyeki finished third in 2:12:57, and Eritrea’s Mulue Andom fourth on 2:13.10. (pk)
