Podium for Poles in speed skating World Cup

Polish speed skaters claimed two podiums on the first day of a World Cup event in Heerenveen, the Netherlands.

Artur Waś on Friday finished second in the men’s 500-metre sprint with a time of 34.79 seconds. Russia’s Ruslan Murashov came first, clocking in at 34.50 seconds, and Mitch Whitmore of the United States was third with 34.81 seconds.

Later in the day, the Polish women’s speed skating team came third.

With a time of 3:03.50, the Poles - Natalia Czerwonka, Katarzyna Bachleda-Curuś and Katarzyna Woźniak - finished behind Japan (2:59.51) and Germany (3:02.47).

The Polish men's squad – made up of Zbigniew Bródka, Jan Szymański and Konrad Niedźwiedzki - came seventh in their team event.

The World Cup event in Heerenveen runs until Sunday. (str/pk)
