Polish driver Robert Kubica is no longer in the frame to drive for the British Williams team next year in a Formula One comeback, the Motorsport.com website has reported.
Russian Sergey Sirotkin has emerged as the favourite to drive for Williams in 2018, according to Motorsport.com.
Kubica has completed several test races for Williams, which is looking for a new driver to race alongside Canada’s Lance Stroll, according to public broadcaster Polish Radio.
“Kubica had been favourite to make a sensational return to F1, with Williams impressed by his feedback and the way he fitted into the team and built up strong relationships,” reported journalist Lawrence Barretto for Motorsport.com.
“However, it has emerged that based on pure performance, data suggests Sirotkin is the stronger candidate,” the article added.
Kubica competed for Renault in Formula One in 2010, scoring three podiums in his season with the French manufacturer before an injury in a rallying crash in 2011 forced him to put his F1 career on hold.
