Known as the Johnny Warren Award in honour of the former captain of the Australian national squad, the distinction is voted on by former players, match officials, football experts and journalists.

Mierzejewski was awarded 37 points over the course of his first season with Sydney FC, in which he played 25 games and scored 13 goals. His closest rivals were 11 points behind.

It is the third individual honour the midfielder has won since arriving at the club. He was previously named player of the year by broadcaster Fox Sports and player of the match in the Football Federation Australia Cup final.

Thirty-one-year-old Mierzejewski was born in Olsztyn, northeastern Poland. He represented Poland in 2010-2013, including in the Euro 2012 tournament which was hosted by Poland and Ukraine. (vb/pk)
