During a meeting at Warsaw's National Stadium, Bańka thanked the athletes for “outclassing all other teams” and for giving fans at home “a great sense of pride and joy.”
He also said that Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki had set aside a special pool of funds totalling PLN 500,000 (EUR 115,500, USD 133,700) for prizes for the team.
The athletes were later in the day scheduled to meet President Andrzej Duda and First Lady Agata Kornhauser-Duda at the presidential palace.
With a total of 61 medals, including 26 gold, Poland finished top of the overall nation standings at the championships, which were held in the German capital from August 20 to 26 and attracted a total of 600 athletes from 40 countries.
Poland won 12 medals, seven gold, four silver and one bronze, and finished second behind Britain in the overall medals table at the European Athletics Championships, which took place in Berlin from August 6 to 12.
