Athletics: Poles in form ahead of European indoor championships

Middle-distance runner Marcin Lewandowski set a national record and European lead time of 3:36.50 in the men’s 1,500 metres on Thursday.

The Pole placed second behind Ethiopia’s Samuel Tefera during the Orlen Copernicus Cup indoor track-and-field event in Toruń, north-central Poland.

Meanwhile, Poland’s Ewa Swoboda won the women’s 60 metres in 7.15 seconds, a hundredth of a second ahead of African sprint queen Marie-Josée Ta Lou.

Swoboda holds the world lead in the women’s 60 metres this season with 7.08.

Some other Polish names to watch during next month’s European indoor championships include Iga Baumgart-Witan and Justyna Święty-Ersetic in the women’s 400 metres and Piotr Lisek and Paweł Wojciechowski in the men’s pole vault.

The European Athletics Indoor Championships take place in Glasgow from March 1 to 3.
