Only 38 percent of the Euro 2012 tickets that are being allocated to the Polish Football Association (PZPN) will go to the fans themselves, it has emerged.
The remainder will go to sponsors and activists, prompting a wave of negative headlines in the press for PZPN chairman Grzegorz Lato.
“Lato has given the tickets away to his mates,” tabloid Fakt claimed on Thursday.
Representatives of the Official Fan Club of the Polish national team had hoped that at least half of the tickets being allocated to PZPN via a special UEFA pool would end up with the fans themselves.
However, it turns out that just 8694 of the 22,891 tickets in the pool will go to the supporters.
Speaking to sports daily Przeglad Sportowy, Lato attempted to make light of the situation.
“We have sent a letter to UEFA about acquiring unused entry passes [allocated for] the federations of our group rivals,” Lato said.
Poland will face Greece, Russia and the Czech Republic in the opening phase of the tournament. (nh/pg)
