What next for the Schengen area? Danuta Isler speaks to Roderick Parkes from the Brussels office of the Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik think-tank.
The European Commission has adopted its first review on the functioning of the Schengen area, which allows for the free movement of people, goods and services throughout much of the EU as well as some neighbouring countries.
The document is accompanied by guidelines which seek to ensure a coherent interpretation and implementation of the selected issues and is aimed at enhancing cooperation among the participating countries.
The EC document also follows a Franco-German proposal that states in Europe’s Schengen border agreement be given more leeway in suspending the pact in extreme cases. They say amendments are necessary to ensure tighter security within the EU.
