Roughly 2,000 kids will not be attending school this year as homeschooling is slowly taking hold in Poland.

Disenchantment with the state-run education system, personal circumstances such as high mobility of families alongside religious reasons are some of the most common motives behind homeschooling.

For long teaching at home has predominantly been a practical option for large families or kids with special education needs, but nowadays an increasing number of parents take the conscious decision to opt out of standardized schooling.

“The children that are homeschooled are probably much more creative than children from regular schools; they do not have limits in the way they think,” says Artur Abramowicz, homeschooler and the headmeaster of the Zofia and Jędrzej Moraczewscy Private Elementary and Junior Secondary School in Sulejówek, which pursues a homeschooling-friendly policy.

Q&A is hosted by Alicja Baczyńska.
