Commercial establishments may soon be putting their surplus food to good use.
Throwing away food fit for consumption is nothing short of a regular practice across the food supply chain. Yet a new law may soon change that after policymakers removed a tax charge on donated foodstuffs levied on distributors and retailers.
As of 1 October, legal regulations will pave the way for free-of-charge charity handouts by commercial establishments.
"We've been waiting for this for ages," says Małgorzata Lelonkiewicz, head of the Federation of Polish Food Banks. "For the past ten years, we've been trying to persuade Polish deputies that we have to change this paradox that on the one hand, a third of food is wasted in Poland, and on the other, two million people live in extreme poverty."
