Wrona's film 'Demon' was one of 18 features competing in the main competition of the festival, which is the key annual showcase of new Polish movies.

The director, who had just returned from the Toronto Film Festival, seemed poised for a major career.

Our correspondent Nick Hodge, who was in Gdynia for the festival, spoke with the director on Thursday about his new feature.

In this interview, perhaps the last he gave, the film-maker reflects on why he chose to explore Polish-Jewish paths in 'Demon', and in such an unlikely fashion.

The film hinges on the emergence of a 'dybbuk', a Jewish spirit, which in Wrona's movie possesses the groom at a rural wedding. Blending elements of horror and comedy, the film is a bold and poignant work, with a haunting finale.
