Police crack drug-dealing football gang

Police have arrested 23 members of a Krakow gang on suspicion of drug-dealing and violence against rivals.

The gang, which touted its allegiance to the Cracovia football club (one of the two principal sides in Krakow), was broken up by officers from the the city's branch of the Central Investigation Bureau (CBS), which was set up specifically to fight organised crime.

Besides cannabis to the value of 50,000 zloty (12,000 euro), officers seized 2.5 kg of amphetamine, as well as baseball bats, machetes and even a sabre and a grenade.

Dariusz Nowak, a spokesmen for the Malopolska region's police, told the Polish Press Agency (PAP) that in terms of violence, none of the victims of the gang had agreed to cooperate with police to date.

The detainees are aged between 23 and 38, and several of them have previous convictions, including for murder.

The suspects could serve sentences of six months to twelve years in prison. (nh)
