According to police spokesperson Agnieszka Zylka in Zabrze, southern Poland, officers found evidence in the man's flat that he had abused and killed the animals.
The suspect, who has not been named, had taken part in an internet cat adoption programme.
Suspicions were raised when the student applied to a woman who had already provided him with cats to supply him with yet more animals.
However, when asked how the previous cats were faring, he failed to answer.
It is understood that the man had been adopting cats over the internet from February to May of this year.
The suspect faces charges of both abusing cats with particular cruelty and killing the animals. If found guilty he could serve three years in prison. (nh)
