Suspected dog meat seized by border guards

Border guards made the discovery while checking residence permits in Wolka Kosowska, which is known as one of Poland's Chinatowns.

The meat belonged to Vietnamese citizens.

''The meat was confiscated so that genetic tests can be carried out, by which we will be able to confirm the animal species which it came from,'' said border guard spokesperson Dagmara Bielec-Janas.

''There is a high probability that some of this meat is dog meat,'' she added.

Meanwhile, of over 30 foreigners of various nationalities that were checked in Wolka Kosowska, two Vietnamese citizens were found to have no documents entitling them to be in Poland.

Bielec-Janas also noted that the premises where the suspicious meat was seized had unnacceptable sanitary conditions.

Two Vietnamese outlets in Wolka Kosowska have already been closed, and the owners could face a prison sentence if it is confirmed that the meat came from dogs. (nh)
