Walesa in hospital with broken leg

The Nobel Peace Prize-winner published a picture of himself in plaster on his personal blog.

''So I managed to fall over and break my leg on a straight road,'' he wrote.

His son, MEP Jaroslaw Walesa, told the Onet website that the former president was returning from making his confession in church when the accident happened.

Walesa is being treated in the same clinic where communist era Interior Minister General Czeslaw Kiszczak is being examined.

Kiszczak was forced to have an examination to confirm whether he is fit to stand trial in connection with the imposition of martial law in December 1981.

It is the latest in a series of cases brought against the 89-year-old.

Walesa himself and scores of opposition activists were arrested as a result of the 1981 crackdown.

On learning that Kiszczak was in the same building Walesa quipped that ''he could have knocked and said hello.''

Asked whether the general should be tried, he said that the matter needs to be ''settled.'' (nh)
