Poland hosted up to 300 Soviet nuclear warheads until the mid-1980s, documents declassified by the defence ministry show.
The nuclear weapons were stored at depots in Podborsk near Bialogard and Brzezica-Kolonia near Borne Sulinowo in the north of Poland, at Templewo in the west and at “several airports”, daily Rzeczpospolita reported.
The depots were constructed with Soviet-supplied materials designs in the years 1967-1970. Poland covered the cost of construction, estimated at PLN 180 million.
The exact date of the withdrawal of the nuclear arsenal from Poland remains unknown but it took place before the Soviet army left its bases in the country at the end of the 1980s. (an)
