The Lechia Gdańsk side was travelling to play in the semi-final of the Polish Championship when the team stopped at a roadside diner for a meal near Modliszewko, west-central Poland.

Polish national player Robert Kwiatkowski sensed trouble when an apparently drunken man asked him for directions while he was making a phone call outside the restaurant.

Kwiatkowski confiscated the man's car keys, and shortly afterwards the driver fell asleep.

I am very proud of Robert,” trainer Paweł Lipkowski commented on Tuesday.

“He's a very good player, and he's fair both on and off the pitch, which I think his behaviour proves.”

Owing to the fact that the team did not want to be late for the key match, they left the sozzled driver with restaurant staff while police drove to the scene.

It turned out that the man had earlier been banned from driving until May 2016. He could serve three years behind bars for the double crime. (nh)
