“The cost of a one-day nationwide referendum is estimated at around PLN 100 million,” said Krzysztof Lorentz from KBW told the PAP news agency, adding that such a cost is similar to the first round of the presidential elections which took place last weekend.
The announcement comes after President Bronisław Komorowski filed a proposal with the Senate earlier this week for a referendum on single-mandate constituencies, party financing from the state budget as well as a change to the taxation system.
Meanwhile, Lorentz informed that money for the referendum would be found in the reserve budget dedicated to election costs.
“Funds for undertaking a referendum have to be found if the relevant authorities bound by the constitution demand it,” he said.
The budget reserve for 2015 is set for almost PLN 356 million for the presidential and parliamentary elections, as well as any other vote which may occur.
A total of PLN 166.4 million has been allocated for both rounds of May’s presidential election. (jb)
