Civic Platform mulls Komorowski’s fate

Komorowski, alongside prime minister, Ewa Kopacz, are invited to discuss the incumbent’s fate within the party.

Parliamentary elections are looming in October and Komorowski’s failure to secure a second term in last Sunday’s presidential election has set alarm bells ringing within PO.

While non-aligned, Komorowski was PO’s candidate in last Sunday’s presidential election second round, in which Andrzej Duda of the opposition Law and Justice (PiS) party won a majority and will assume the presidency on 6 August.

PO’s managing body met on Monday, a day after the result showed Duda winning with 51.55 percent of the vote.

Komorowski is seen by some in the party as having run a weak campaign and reports suggest he will be asked to step down when his presidency ends.

Deputy health minister Sławomir Neumann, for example, accused Komorowski of distancing himself from PO during the campaign. PO general secretary and minister of sport Andrzej Biernat told journalists that the campaign had been in effect run by Komorowski rather than PO. (jh/jb)
