Four counter-protesters arrested over Gdańsk gay march

Four counter-protesters were arrested in connection with a 'March of Equality' that took place in Gdańsk over the weekend.

According to police spokesperson Lucyna Rekowska, several counter-protesters threw eggs and bangers at marchers on Saturday.
Likewise, when the procession reached the whereabouts of the main train station, counter-protesters tried to block the path of the marchers.
A number of nationalist groups had been involved in the counter-demonstrations.
The 'March of Equality' was joined by several public figures including Wanda Nowicka, Deputy Speaker of Poland's lower house of parliament. Ambassador of Sweden Steffan Herrstrom also took part.
At the beginning of the march, an address was given by Robert Biedroń, the openly homosexual mayor of Słupsk and former MP (2011-2014) of the liberal Your Movement party.
“Twenty-five years ago we regained our independence,” he said of the collapse of communism.
“But we didn't regain our solidarity; we want to live in a country in which no one tells us how we should dress or what we have to do.” (nh)
