Government Spokeswoman Małgorzata Kidawa-Błońska has said that the Civic Platform (PO) has “become mature” enough to manage a successful parliamentary campaign without the backing of former PM and party leader Donald Tusk.

Asked on whether Donald Tusk is the party’s only “secret weapon” for the parliamentary campaign, Kidawa-Błońska said that “the era of Donald Tusk in PO has come to an end, he holds important positions in Europe now”.
“We have to act alone, and despite various problems we will manage, and Donald Tusk can support the government with some good advice, he can’t really do it any other way,” Kidawa-Błońska told broadcaster TVP Info.
Party manifesto later in June
Meanwhile, speaking on the run-up to the elections this autumn, Kidawa-Błońska said that PO will hold a convention on 20 June.
Echoing previous comments made by Rafał Grupiński, the head of PO’s parliamentary club, Kidawa-Błońska said that the party “will not change course”.
“We have wings on the left and right, but the centre marks our goals,” she told TVP Info, adding that “we are open to various groups and we want that to stay”.
Kidawa-Błońska also said that outgoing president, Bronisław Komorowski, is set to return to the PO fold and support the party ahead of the elections, slated for October.
“It is still too early to say what our cooperation will look like, [Komorowski] will decide,” Kidawa-Błońska said. (jb)
