Słupsk mayor Robert Biedroń is Poland’s first openly-gay city official to be elected into office.
The charges were filed by the National Committee against Sects and Violence, as well as local activists loyal to the conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party.
According to Ryszard Nowak, the chairman of the Committee, by removing a portrait of John Paul II from his office, the mayor insulted the object of worship. In his opinion, a crime has been committed.
Nowak and other members of the Committee said that the mayor insulted their religious feelings.
The image of the Pope was transferred to St. Mary's Church in Słupsk, where it has allegedly been hanging for a few days.
