In his first interview since losing May's presidential election, outgoing head of state Bronisław Komorowski has said he was lumped with the government by an exasperated electorate.

A desire appeared among voters to punish those in power,” Komorowski told the Polityka weekly.

And I was considered to be part of the ruling camp,” he added.

When he became president in 2010, Komorowski was obliged to shed his membership of the Civic Platform party, which has been senior coalition partner since 2007.

He had been the clear favourite to win this year's election, but the vote went to a second round and he ultimately lost to Andrzej Duda, candidate of the conservative Law and Justice party.

Komorowski also claims he was unfairly smeared in the campaign by “a gigantic, organized action of negative PR, aimed at demolishing my image, destroying my dignity, and it was carried out in an extraordinarily brutal and effective way.”

The outgoing president has said that for now he does not intend to rejoin Civic Platform.

I don't rule out such an eventuality, but I am not planning [to rejoin],” he said, adding that “there is life outside politics.” (nh)
