The domestic senior citizens' care market is estimated at PLN 5.4 billion (nearly EUR 1.3 bn) and will expand to PLN 8 billion (EUR 1.8 bn) by 2020, according to consulting firm PwC.

Analysts, meanwhile, underline that the value of the market could even double, as it meets just 50 percent of demand for elderly care services in society. With the country's aging population, the healthcare sector is increasingly addressing the growing needs for an array of services, such as nursing and sick care of senior citizens, nursing home and home care services, along with institutional, long-term and hospice care.
As Szymon Piątkowski, from PwC points out, at present public spending stands at PLN 3.2 billion (over EUR 0.75 bn), with the bulk of the funding coming from local councils − PLN 1.9 billion (EUR 0.45 bn). Meanwhile, private expenditures on commercial long-term care for the elderly have reached PLN 2.2 billion (over EUR 0.5 bn).
According to PwC expert Piątkowski, Poland could follow the example of the Czech Republic and Slovakia, and lure Western tourists from countries such as Germany to benefit from their elderly care sector. (aba/rk)
