The incident occurred at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, western Poland.
According to police, the attack took place at the university's chemistry faculty.
The suspect, a third year chemistry student, had apparently come to pick up some materials from the professor in connection with his thesis.
However, the professor was apparently having a meeting with another student at the time, and he asked the suspect to come back after half an hour.
The suspect reappeared at the scene five minutes later and allegedly began attacking the professor with a meat cleaver.
The other student managed to get help, and the suspect was eventually restrained. He is now in police custody.
The professor was rushed to hospital and he is in a stable condition. However, he has been quoted as saying that he is bewildered as to why the suspect attacked him. (nh/pk)
