A doctor who was called to the scene discerned that no third party was involved with the death of 49-year-old Piotr M. (name withheld in accordance with Polish privacy laws).

A post-mortem is expected to take place today.

Piotr M. was head of the Malbork police between 2000 – 2004, after which he spent time working for Polish Police Headquarters in Warsaw as a director in the Tactical Office for Combating Crime.

Radio Gdansk reports that Prosecutors in Krakow accused Piotr M. for defending the interests of Piotr K., who headed an illegal fuel racket. In 2006 Piotr K. was sentenced to three years in prison.

Piotr M. denied the corruption allegations. (jb)
