Venice Commission eyes Poland’s latest legislation proposal on constitutional court

The Venice Commission, an international watchdog, is likely to issue a preliminary opinion on a new bill on Poland’s Constitutional Tribunal, before it is signed into law.

According to the TVN24 television channel, the opinion is to be ready by the beginning of next week.
CE Secretary General Thorbjørn Jagland has asked the Council of Europe’s advisory body, the Venice Commission, to urgently check if the bill is in accordance with the Polish Constitution.
Last Thursday, the draft bill on Poland’s top court based on proposals put forward by Poland's governing Law and Justice (PiS) party, was voted through by the lower house of Parliament (Sejm). The MPs rejected proposals submitted by the opposition.
The bill has been forwarded to the Senate.
An ongoing dispute over the country’s Constitutional Tribunal has sparked criticism abroad and massive protests in the country. The European Commission has initiated a so-called rule of law procedure against Poland. (ał/aba)
