The German government proposed a new civil defence concept which advises citizens to stockpile food and water in case of a serious emergency that hinders rescue services.

According to the draft, German citizens should have 10 days worth of food at their disposal, though some opposition MPs in Germany have dismissed this as scaremongering.

In response the Polish Interior Minister commented, “This is most likely related to the terrorist threat in Germany. A month ago there was a terrorist attack in Munich. […] In Poland there is no terrorist threat, there is therefore no need to gather supplies.”

Błaszczak added that Poland has procedures for dealing with national emergencies already in place, with local government authorities prepared to take an active part in restoring stability.

The Minister stated that in his opinion, “Poland is now in a better situation as the Law and Justice government has not fulfilled the commitments of the previous government [...] concerning the acceptance of immigrants from the Middle East and North Africa.”

Earlier this year Poland announced that it would not accept the 7,000 refugees allocated to the country as part an EU-wide programme to resettle 150,000 asylum seekers from Syria and Eritrea. (sl)
